Claude Pro vs Max vs Team: Which Plan Should Your Business Pay For?

A plan-by-plan buyer's guide for 2026: usage limits, seat costs, and data controls.

Reviewed by Jonathan West · Updated Sep 10, 2026

Choose Claude Pro for one light user, Max for one heavy user, and Team when several people need shared billing and admin controls. That single rule covers most business decisions. The rest of this guide shows the math behind it.

This page compares Claude subscription PLANS, not Claude models. Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise are what you pay for. Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus are the models you run inside any plan. If you want the model decision instead, see our guide on picking the best Claude model.

The Claude Plan Lineup at a Glance

Claude sells five plan tiers in 2026, from a free account to custom Enterprise contracts. Each tier changes three things: how much you can use, how many people share it, and how your data is handled.

Prices change often. Treat the numbers below as of 2026 and confirm the current figures on anthropic.com/pricing before you buy.

  • Claude Free ($0, as of 2026): limited daily usage, single user, best for trying Claude before you commit.
  • Claude Pro ($20/mo, as of 2026): roughly 5x free usage, single user, best for one person using Claude a few times a day.
  • Claude Max 5x ($100/mo, as of 2026): about 5x Pro usage, single user, best for one power user who hits Pro limits daily.
  • Claude Max 20x ($200/mo, as of 2026): about 20x Pro usage, single user, best for all-day heavy use like Claude Code sessions.
  • Claude Team ($25/seat/mo, or ~$20/seat billed annually, as of 2026): 5-seat minimum, shared workspace, central billing, best for a department that needs admin controls.
  • Claude Team Premium (~$125/seat/mo, or ~$100 annually, as of 2026): higher per-seat usage plus Team admin features, for teams of heavy users.
  • Claude Enterprise (custom pricing, as of 2026): SSO, audit logs, and configurable data retention, for larger orgs with security requirements.
Plan is separate from model. Every paid plan can run Haiku, Sonnet, or Opus. See /guides/best-claude-model to choose the model.

Choosing and rolling out the right Claude plan for a team is easy to get wrong. Let's map the plan mix, seats, and usage limits to how your team actually works.

What Claude Usage Limits Actually Mean

Claude usage limits reset on a rolling window, not a fixed monthly quota. Most limits run on a 5-hour cycle, with weekly caps layered on top for heavy tools like Claude Code.

Anthropic does not publish exact message counts. Usage depends on how long your chats are, which model you run, and how much you attach.

So the "5x" and "20x" numbers are relative, not absolute. Max 5x gives you about five times the room Pro has before you hit a limit. Max 20x gives about twenty times.

  • Pro: fine for a handful of chats a day; you may hit limits during a long working session.
  • Max 5x: built for someone who works with Claude most of the day.
  • Max 20x: built for near-constant use, including long coding runs.
  • In May 2026, Anthropic doubled the 5-hour limit for Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise seats.
  • Light-user signal: you open Claude a few times a day for short questions and rarely see a usage warning. Pro likely covers you.
  • Heavy-user signal: you keep a Claude Code session open most of the day, or you hit a usage warning more than once or twice a week. That points to Max.
If your one power user keeps hitting Pro limits by lunch, Max 5x is usually the fix, not a second Pro seat.

Claude Pro vs Max: When the Upgrade Pays Off

Claude Pro is $20 a month, Max 5x is $100, and Max 20x is $200, and all three run the same models. Upgrade only when one person keeps running out of room on Pro, not when you want it to feel faster.

The price jump is steep. Max 5x costs five times Pro for about five times the usage per session. Max 20x costs ten times Pro for about twenty times.

That makes Max 20x the better value per unit of usage, but only if you actually reach those limits. Most people never hit Pro's ceiling, so the extra room sits idle.

Max is not unlimited either. Anthropic layers a weekly cap on top of the 5-hour session limit, and a genuine all-day Claude Code user can still hit it on Max 20x. Check the current caps on the Max plan page before you assume $200 buys endless usage.

  • Stay on Pro if you rarely see a limit warning.
  • Move to Max 5x if you hit limits a few times a week.
  • Move to Max 20x if you hit limits daily or run long Claude Code sessions.
Is Claude Max worth it? Only for a genuine heavy user. For light use, Max wastes money.

Max and Team Solve Different Problems

Max and Team are bought by different people for different reasons, which is the point most buyers miss. Max is about usage headroom for one person. Team is about control across many people.

You buy Max because a single power user needs more room. It adds no admin panel, no shared billing, and no central data controls.

You buy Team because you need one invoice, one place to manage users, and a written promise about data handling. A Team Standard seat gives only a little more usage than Pro; you are paying for the controls, not the headroom.

This is why a five-person startup with one heavy Claude user often buys one Max seat plus a few Pro seats, instead of putting everyone on Team.

Team also includes Claude for Small Business's 15 prebuilt workflows at no extra cost. See our Claude for Small Business guide for what's included.

Every Claude seat, on any plan, is a single-user account. Sharing one login across a small team violates Anthropic's terms of service and leaves no record of who ran which prompt, which is a real audit-trail risk if a client or regulator ever asks who touched what. Our Claude for Small Business guide covers the workflow templates and seat math for a lean team that cannot yet justify Team's five-seat minimum.

Buy Max for headroom on one user. Buy Team for admin, billing, and data controls across many.

Claude Team Pricing and Seat Economics

Claude Team costs about $25 per seat monthly, dropping to roughly $20 per seat when billed annually, with a five-seat minimum. That sets a floor of five paid seats even if only four people need access.

Team Standard seats give only slightly more usage than Pro. Team Premium seats give much more, at around $125 per seat monthly, but cost more than a single Max 5x seat.

So the seat math rewards buying Team for coordination, then adding a Max seat for your one heaviest user if needed. Do not buy Team Premium for everyone when only one person is the bottleneck.

ChatGPT Team's seat minimum is lower, at two seats instead of five. See our ChatGPT vs Claude for Business comparison for the full price and seat breakdown.

Plan changes are not locked in. Anthropic applies a switch between Pro, Max, and Team seats immediately and prorates the price difference, so you can downgrade or cancel without losing paid time. See our Claude pricing guide for how the proration works.

A Team Premium seat also includes Claude Code, not just a higher chat usage cap. See our Claude Code for Business guide for what that adds for a coding team.

Seats add and remove anytime with no lock-in contract, so a Team workspace can flex with headcount instead of committing to a fixed term. See our Claude Enterprise pricing guide for how that compares to a negotiated Enterprise contract.

Anthropic offers volume pricing once a workspace grows past standard per-seat rates — that conversation happens with Anthropic sales, not through self-serve checkout. Our Claude Enterprise pricing guide covers what to ask for.

Team's context window is smaller than Enterprise's on the same underlying model, which matters for anyone working with long documents or codebases. See our Claude Team vs Enterprise comparison for the exact context-window difference.

Standard and Premium seats can be mixed inside one Team workspace, so a department can put its heavy users on Premium and everyone else on Standard under a single bill. See our Claude Team vs Enterprise comparison for how mixed seating works.

  • 5-seat minimum: budget for at least five seats from day one.
  • Team Standard: pay mainly for shared workspace and admin, not extra usage.
  • Team Premium: pay for both, best when several users are heavy.
  • Mixed setup: Team for the group, one Max seat for the outlier heavy user.

Data Handling and Retention by Plan

Anthropic does not train its models on your data in any paid plan, including Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Training use is off by default for business tiers.

Retention is where the plans split. Team keeps data for about 30 days by default, then purges it. Enterprise lets you configure retention, including zero retention beyond the request.

Team does not include SSO, audit logs, or zero-data-retention. Those are Enterprise features. If your security team requires them, budget for Enterprise, not Team.

Team also does not include HIPAA, SOC 2, or industry-specific compliance configurations out of the box. See our Claude for Small Business guide for what regulated teams need to add.

For the specific SOC 2 Type I/II status, ISO certifications, and GDPR data processing agreement behind each Claude plan, see our AI model compliance comparison.

A signed Data Processing Agreement (DPA) is the one real compliance gap between Pro and Team, not the no-training policy. Claude Pro is an individual consumer plan with no business DPA attached. Claude Team (and Enterprise) automatically includes a DPA with Standard Contractual Clauses, built into Anthropic's Commercial Terms of Service and available to view and accept in the Anthropic console. If a client's security review specifically asks for a signed DPA, that requirement is met by moving to Team, not by anything Pro is missing on training.

Export your workspace data before you cancel a Team plan. Once a subscription lapses, conversation history and admin records are not guaranteed to stay retrievable. See our ChatGPT vs Claude for Business comparison for how the two providers' export and offboarding steps compare.

Per-user spend caps for admins are an Enterprise feature, not a Team one. Team's admin console covers seats and billing at the workspace level, but capping what an individual user can spend requires Enterprise. See our Claude Team vs Enterprise comparison for the full admin-control gap.

  • Pro and Max: personal accounts, no central admin visibility, no shared controls.
  • Team: no training on your data, ~30-day retention, basic admin, Google or Microsoft SSO only.
  • Enterprise: SSO, SCIM, audit logs, role-based access, and custom retention including zero retention.
The Team-to-Enterprise line is a compliance line, not a usage line. Cross it when audit logs and retention controls are required.

Which Plan for a Team of N

Match the plan to your team size and how heavily people use Claude. The right answer changes as headcount and usage grow.

Use the guide below as a starting point, then confirm current prices and limits on anthropic.com before you commit budget.

  • 1 light user: Claude Pro.
  • 1 heavy user: Claude Max 5x, or Max 20x for all-day and Claude Code use.
  • 2 to 4 users, no admin needs: individual Pro seats, plus one Max seat for the heavy user.
  • 5 or more users needing shared billing and admin: Claude Team, from five seats up.
  • A team of heavy users: Claude Team Premium, or Team plus a Max seat for the outlier.
  • Any size needing SSO, audit logs, or custom retention: Claude Enterprise.
Start smaller than you think. Upgrading a seat is fast; refunding an over-bought plan is not.

Rolling out Claude Without Wasting Seats

Roll out Claude by starting people on Pro and watching who actually hits limits. Real usage data tells you who needs Max better than any guess.

Buy Team once you need central billing or shared projects, not before. Below five heavy users, a mix of Pro and one Max seat is often cheaper.

Review seats every quarter. Usage patterns shift, and paying for idle Max or Premium seats is the most common Claude overspend we see.

  • Pilot on Pro first to find your real heavy users.
  • Add one Max seat for the person who bottlenecks.
  • Move to Team only when admin, billing, or data controls justify it.
  • Right-size seats quarterly to stop paying for idle capacity.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Claude Pro ($20/mo) and Max ($100 or $200/mo) are the same product with different usage limits. Max 5x gives about five times Pro's usage, and Max 20x about twenty times. Both are single-user plans. Upgrade to Max only when one person keeps hitting Pro limits.
  • Claude Max is worth it only for genuine heavy users. If you rarely see a usage warning on Pro, Max wastes money. It buys headroom, not a smarter Claude. All-day users and people running long Claude Code sessions get the most value from it.
  • Claude Team costs about $25 per seat monthly, or roughly $20 per seat billed annually, with a five-seat minimum, as of 2026. Team Premium runs around $125 per seat monthly for higher usage. Confirm current pricing on anthropic.com/pricing before you buy.
  • A small team with one heavy user often does best with individual Pro seats plus one Max seat. Buy Claude Team once you need shared billing, an admin panel, or central data controls. Team's Standard seats give only slightly more usage than Pro.
  • A Claude Team Standard seat gives only slightly more usage than Claude Pro on the same rolling 5-hour window — you are paying mainly for the shared workspace, central billing, and admin controls, not a big jump in room to chat. If your real bottleneck is one or more people running out of usage rather than needing shared admin, Team Premium (higher per-seat usage, at a higher per-seat price) or adding an individual Max seat for that person is the better fix than assuming Team Standard alone solves it. Anthropic does not publish exact message counts for any tier, so there is no fixed number to quote — only the relative comparisons above.
  • No. Anthropic does not train its models on your inputs or outputs in any paid plan, including Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise. Training use is off by default for business tiers. Retention still varies: Team purges data after about 30 days, while Enterprise allows custom retention.
  • No. Claude Pro is an individual consumer plan and has no business DPA attached. If a client or security review requires a signed DPA for GDPR, that is a genuine reason to move from Pro to Team, not a training-data issue — no paid Claude plan trains on your data. Claude Team (and Enterprise) automatically includes a DPA with Standard Contractual Clauses, built into Anthropic's Commercial Terms of Service and available to view and accept in the Anthropic console.
  • Move to Claude Enterprise when you need SSO, audit logs, role-based access, or custom data retention. Team does not include those. Enterprise also fits organizations that outgrow Team's 150-seat cap. Pricing is custom and negotiated with Anthropic's sales team.
  • No. Your plan sets usage limits and controls, not which model you run. Every paid plan can use Haiku, Sonnet, and Opus. Higher plans may get earlier access to new models. To choose a model, see our best Claude model guide.
  • A Claude subscription does not include API access. Pro, Max, Team, and Enterprise cover claude.ai and Claude Code chat usage only. Building your own integration with the Claude API is billed separately, per token, through a developer account. Confirm current API pricing on anthropic.com/pricing before you budget for both a subscription and API usage. For a side-by-side of flat seat billing versus per-token API billing, see the plan-switching section of our Claude pricing guide.
  • Claude blocks your next message and shows a wait time until your usage window resets. It does not queue or throttle your request in the background. The task simply stops until the limit clears or you upgrade your plan. There is no overage billing on any Claude plan — Anthropic never charges you extra for going over; you are simply blocked until the window resets or you move to a higher tier. Plan for this risk by moving a heavy user to Max before a critical project, not after they get blocked.
  • Claude Team requires a minimum of five seats and supports up to 150. If you need more than 150 seats, you move to Enterprise. Budget for at least five paid seats even if fewer people currently need access.
  • Max, for anyone running Claude Code most of the day. Pro's usage window is fine for a handful of short sessions, but long coding runs eat through it fast — the weekly caps that apply to heavy tools like Claude Code are layered on top of the regular usage limit. Max 20x is built for near-constant use, including long Claude Code sessions; Max 5x is the middle ground for someone who codes with Claude daily but not all day.
  • No. Anthropic issues a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) only for the first-party Claude API and HIPAA-ready Enterprise plans — Max, like Pro, is a personal consumer plan with no BAA option, so it cannot be used to handle protected health information. Teams that need to process PHI should move to HIPAA-ready Enterprise or the API instead. See our Is Claude HIPAA Compliant? guide for the full breakdown.
  • No. Anthropic issues a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) only for the first-party Claude API and HIPAA-ready Enterprise plans — Team has no BAA option, so it cannot be used to handle protected health information even though it includes a standard DPA. Teams that need to process PHI should move to HIPAA-ready Enterprise or the API instead. See our Is Claude HIPAA Compliant? guide for the full breakdown.
  • Anthropic does not publish a mid-month proration policy for Claude Max, and consumer subscriptions like Pro, Max, and Team typically bill the full amount for the current cycle starting the day you subscribe, then renew at the same rate each cycle after that — there is no published day-by-day discount for a partial first month. Do not assume a specific dollar credit for days remaining in the month; confirm the exact charge on the checkout screen before you subscribe, and check your account billing page or contact Anthropic support directly if the amount charged looks off.
  • Anthropic does not publish a refund policy for canceling Pro or Max partway through a billing cycle. Canceling stops the next renewal, and support pages describe switching or downgrading between plans as immediate with a prorated price difference, but they do not state that a mid-cycle cancellation returns cash for days you already paid for and did not use. Do not assume a partial refund is coming; check your account billing page for the exact terms shown at checkout, or contact Anthropic support directly before you cancel if the answer changes your decision.
  • A bigger plan raises the ceiling. It does not remove it. Cowork sessions draw from the same 5-hour and weekly usage windows as Claude Code, so moving from Pro to Max 5x or Max 20x buys more room per session, and a genuine all-day build can still hit the weekly cap even on Max 20x. Two things move the needle more than the plan alone. Break the build into batches, a few dozen pages per session instead of the whole 800 in one run, so each batch fits inside a usage window instead of getting cut off mid-task. And if multiple people can split the work, a Team plan lets several seats run in parallel rather than one account queueing everything serially. For a single heavy user running long sessions most of the day, Max 20x is the realistic upgrade. It will not turn an 800-page, image-heavy build into a same-day job.
  • You can subscribe a 50-person team directly through the Claude pricing page without speaking to sales. Claude Team supports 5 to 150 seats on self-serve checkout, so headcount alone does not require an Enterprise contract. You can mix Standard seats at $20 to $25 per month and Premium seats at $100 to $125 per month in one workspace. Move to Claude Enterprise only if your organization requires single sign-on (SSO) with System for Cross-domain Identity Management (SCIM) provisioning, audit logs, role-based access, or custom data retention.
