Kimi K3 is Moonshot AI's open-weights large language model, released in July 2026 with roughly 2.8 trillion total parameters. Moonshot reports a context window of around one million tokens, and the company plans a full open-source release of the weights by late July 2026.

For legal research, the appeal is reading a large record in one pass instead of many small chunks. Because the weights are open, a firm can also self-host the model to keep research material off third-party servers.

Privilege and Self-Hosting

Self-hosting Kimi K3 keeps research material on infrastructure your firm controls, rather than sending it to Moonshot's hosted API. That matters because the hosted API sends prompts to servers in China, which raises data-residency questions for privileged material.
